ny vodiondry : the engagement

MITARI-BADY TSY LASAM-BODIONDRY

do you know this saying?

Malagasy people were very respectful of tradition. For example, they got engaged
before they held hands in public in the old times. So if a man lived with his mistress without being married or even engaged, in the Merina tribe - whereas in the other tribes, the man could try his future wife for a certain period of time- this saying was appropriate for their situation.

The "vodiondry" is a sum of money given to the parents of the girl to somehow reimburse them for all they have spent on her. It is a symbol of engagement for the future bridegroom.

The vodiakoho is really given to the parents when they and their children share a chicken in a meal, otherwise it is substituted with a sum of money called "solombodiakoho" on the new years's day or any special feast.

The saying is: mitari-bady tsy lasam-bodiondry (or tsy lasa vodiondry), henatra eo amin'ny tany ama-monina.

Ny kambana : twins are abandoned in the forest in the Antambahoaka tribe

watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OB0UtOxwEWU

3: 10 to 3:40

Twins (or triplets, so on) are damned according to the Antambahoaka people. Therefore, they are abandoned to die in the forest or fields. It is said that if they were kept in the family, the other members would get sick and die.

So to get rid of the malediction or taboo, they are abandoned or else sometimes they are put at the gate of the barn, the zebus tread them when they get out, but if the children survive they are taken back into the family. Sometimes the family hide them and they are just separated from birth, so they can survive in different villages or families.

manosika pneu: a malagasy game

It is a game, in which each boy in turn pushes the tyre with two long sticks. There is another version, with a hoop, pushed with one stick, you must roll it as far as you can, and you win if you keep it rolling for a long distance.

kapa kiranyl : a symbol of poverty in Madagascar

The kapa fingotra is made out of rubber from old tyres. The shoes are handmade on command by any shoemaker who can vary his pattern.

The kiraro kiranyl are made out of plastic; they are imported from abroad. Basically they are for the pool area only.

These two types of shoes are symbols of poverty in Madagascar, because the weather is very hot all the year long, so in those shoes you have your feet sweating all the time.

The following song tells about the change of situation of a young boy who was poor in high school time but now is abroad ( the images in the video are the proofs of his new situation)

Raha mieritreritra ny fiainako taloha aho
Tamin’izany fotoana izany mbola mpianatra
Tsy mba anisan’ireny "play-boys" ireny aho
Ka tsy nana-namana fa nandeha irery.

Izaho ilay bandy kely tsotsotra
Mpanao kapa kyranil
Mandeha an-tongotra rehefa mianatra
Fa tsy amina aotomobila
Somary menamenatra
Rehefa mahita sipa manja kely
Fa matahotra ny ho voarora
Ka aleoko tsy miteny.

Nony taty aoriana kosa noho izany rehetra izany
Tafita tamin’ny fiainako aho fa tsy olona ambany
Ireo niavonavona taloha nanjary nanontany
"Fa inona kay no asanao no niova aok’izany?"

Izaho ilay bandy kely tsotsotra
Mpanao kapa kyranil
Mandeha an-tongotra rehefa mianatra
Fa tsy amina aotomobila
Somary menamenatra
Rehefa mahita sipa manja kely
Fa matahotra ny ho voarora
Ka aleoko tsy miteny.

There are two stress accents, Corbin just puts the second one

Girl=Tsara-Karakory

Boy =Tsara= tschara (false)

The s is too deep tsch

Iza // anaranao

Do not pronounce all the letters; a is not pronounced so high

too much pause==iza’naranao?

Firy taona ianao? Firy//taona//ianao=firitôn’énao?

There is no pauses between the words= it sounds strange

Girl=Izaho efapolo taona , firy taona ianao?

INONA ARY IZANY O? WHAT IS IT?

IZA ARY IZANY O?
WHAT IS IT? WHO IS IT?
Read the texts and have a guess, if you don't know, go to the hints.

1-Anti-dahy anankiray efa fotsy volo sy fotsy volombava izato izy ! Efa antitra tokoa no fijeriko azy, nefa mbola matanjaka tsara. Mibaby entana feno kilalao sy vatomamy izy. Iza io?
2-Mahagaga ahy fa mitovy toetra daholo ny……madinika rehetra, na dia samy hafa aza ny volon-kodiny sy ny fiteniny. Samy tia lalao, mahay mihira, tia tantara ary koa mora mifankatia. Iza ireo madinika?
3-Odrey izato haingony! Manaitra ahy ery ilay kintana mamirapiratra ery an-tapony ery! Ary saiky isaky ny tendron-kazo dia misy kintana samihafa soratra avokoa: mena, maintso, vony, manga. Manjelanjelatra avokoa izay rehetra jerena rehetra noho ireto kofehy mamirapiratra mitsoriaka etsy sy eroa. Iza/inona ilay lazaiko eto?
4-Tsitapitapitr’izay dia indro nisy lehilahy antitra efa fotsy volo, lava volombava be, miakanjo mena lava, niditra ny varavarana. Natahotra aho ka lasa nitsoaka. Fa iza ary ity?
AN OBJECT
5-Tànana amin’ny kofehy kely fa raha tsy izany dia lasan’ny rivotra. Fa nahoana kosa ho’aho no tsy mba misavoana ny ahy? Inona ary no mila rivotra?
6-Dia nampandrosoiny tao amin’ny efitra kely dia kely izy. Nony afaka kelikely anefa dia injany tsaroan’ilay zanaky ny mpanjaka fa nidina… nidina ihany ilay efitrano kely ary farany dia nijanona. Inona ilay nihetsika?
7-Natao sava hao eran’ny toerana: novakiana ny varavarana rehetra, tsy nisy nasiana efitra tsy nosavaina. Inona no nosavaina?
A DAY OR A SEASON
8-Mifanao fanomezana amin’io andro io fa ravoravo ny fo sy ny saina. Ny zanaka lasa manatitra “solombodiakoho” ho an’ny ray aman-dreny sy ny zoky. Ny ray aman-dreny kosa mamaly izany ka manome “solom-penakoho” ho an’ny zanaka. Andro inona io?
9- Avy hatrany dia be fiavy ny orana. Tsy maintsy mihazakazaka mamonjy fialofana ny olona sendra mitaredretra tany rehetra tany. Miriadriatra ny varatra, ary tsy azo atao ny mialoka eny am-bodihazo, fa halam-baratra ireny. Feno riaka ny lalankely, ary toy ny notondrahana avokoa ny zava-maniry rehetra. Fotoan'andro inona io?
10-Be loatra ny ranonorana sady nisy zavadoza indroa misesy tany amorontsiraka atsinanana. Tondraka avokoa ny renirano sy ny ony. Vaky ny fefiloha. Safotry ny rano ny tanàna. Simba ny voly, ary marobe ny olona tsy nanan-trano intsony fa lasan’ny ranobe. Inona ilay zavadoza?
BIBY
11-Isan’ny biby mahagaga tokoa izy, fa raha jerena ny vatany dia tahaka ny jako: manana tànana roa sy tongotra roa misy rantsana izy; ary ny bikany sy ny fombafombany mihanika hazo dia iraisany mihitsy. Raha jerena anefa ny lohany dia samy hafa mihitsy, satria ny endrikiny jako dia mitovitovy amin’ny olombelona ratsy tarehy, fa ny endrik'ity kosa dia tahakahaka ny an’ny alika. Iza ity?
12-Nisy biby iray niantso ny namany: “andao isika samy hatono ka ho hita izay tsy may? Iza ilay nantsoina?

Sihanaka dialect: tanala very sampy

TANALA VERY SAMPY

here is a sample music from the Sihanaka dialect (~betsimisaraka dialect), from Ambatondrazaka region.

In fact, there are just two types of Malagasy dialects: the southern and northern varieties. The merina, the official language is considered as a northern one, by the accent.

Every malagasy person understands the merina dialect, everybody can even speak it, but it is a bit difficult for the merina people to understand/ or speak to the others.

***********

TANALA VERY SAMPY*

Clip Ny Zanatsihanaka Tanala very sampy jereo eto watch here) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=amqrTdnylUY

" Tanala very sampy ka ny manova no mety" is a saying inspired by the Tanala tribe, a people of cowherds. If one of them has lost his amulets, he will not find it in the vast forest, so it is better for him to change for a new one.
In other words, it means that if someone has lost something very important (for example, his sweetheart), it is better for him to find another one.

Antaisaka/ Antesaka dialect;: ny teny fiainana

Efa nizaka ny momba amin’io lala roy io ny zanaky zanahary. Hoy izy : zakabe ny vavahady ary malalaky ny varangara mandeha amin’ ne fahavereza, ka maro ne olo mandeha agny. Ka kity sady pisa koa ny vavahady mandeha amin’ny fiainana mandrakizay ka vitsy no mahita an’azy. Izao no zakan’i Jesosy : za sahala ny lala misy amitsika amin’ izao fiainana izao da ny lala roy io. Ne lala dia ratsy, dia ne lala tsara. Nanomboka tamin’ny nampisy ny fiainana dia tamin’ny lala ratsy no napisy ny olombelo. Ohatry: ny zaza madiniky dia efa mahafatatry mangalatry, hainy ny mavandy, vinitry, tsy magnaiky, miavognavogna, raha miha olobe dia maika vao mahavita zavatra ratsy koa: mamono olo, mina-toaky, mifoka rongony, anina aby io raha ratsy aby io. Izay izy saroko: raha tiagnao ny andeha amy zanaky zanahary dia tsy maitsy mifidy isika amy io lala roy io: ne ny ratsy iza na ny tsara. izao no zakain’i Jesosy : iaho no lala hoy izy, tsy misy olo mandeha any amin’ny abako afatsy aminy alalako. Izaho no jiosy, i Jesosy reiky ne lala. Raha tiagnao no tonga any andanitra sy fianana mandrakizay da minoa an’i Jesosy ho mpamonjy. Tano ary ny ezakay aminao ary ekeo amin’ny fonao tanteraky, aoka ianao hanaradia an’ i Jesosy ka anolotry ny fiainanao tanteraky. Mangataka ianao ary Jesosy mba ho raisy ny fonao sady ho raisy ny fiainanao. Momba anao mandrakariva ary Jesosy sady mandray anao ary miamby anao agny ambadika fahafatesana, ka noho izany dia tapahy ny hevitranao fa aza mangataka andro ka mizaka amin ‘i Jesosy hoe: mibaboka aho Jesosy fa mpanota fa nony aminahy no nahafaty anao ka mamelahy ny heloko ary mandray anao ho mpamonjy ne tegnako.
